I had rather be on my farm than be emperor of the world – George Washington
I don’t know about you, but I love a good farm tour. The sight of rows and rows of crops and flowers blanketing the landscape is an undeniably quiescent experience. Colorful tulips and daffodils paint the fields in sunny hues of yellow, pink, and red, ushering in another Pacific Northwest spring. Autumn offers its own unique charm with vibrant orange pumpkins, and crisp corn stalks evoking a sense of rustic simplicity. And then, of course, there’s Christmastime with festive celebrations, holiday merriment, and the ever-present smell of pine in the air.
My husband and I recently had the opportunity, to visit a local farm during sunflower season, and it was nothing short of magical. Occasionally, you stumble upon a place so charming and unpretentious that you feel immediately at home. Knutson Farms in Sumner, Washington, is one of those places.
One of the first things we noticed upon arrival was the big white barn. The main building is home to a lovely gift shop and a welcoming staff who were happy to answer any questions we might have. For a small fee, we were granted access to the fields armed with clippers and a mission to seek out the most radiant and glorious sunflowers we could find.
During the early morning hours, the fields are quiet and free from crowds, allowing us the time to wander and really take in our surroundings. Vibrant sunflowers tower over us, gently swaying in the breeze, creating a whimsical ambiance.
Bees buzz from flower to flower, gathering pollen and adding to the enchanting atmosphere. Naturally, we had to pause and observe them flittering to and fro as they worked tirelessly, communicating with one another through their special dance.
Of course, anyone who knows me knows I have a coffee habit that would rival the likes of the Gilmore Girls. Fortunately, Knutson Farms has a remedy for those coffee cravings: the cutest little coffee cart you ever saw.
Today, I opted for one of the farm’s specials, the Meadow Latte, a delicious blend of honey and lavender hand-crafted with an extra shot of espresso. The Knutson Farms coffee cart is open daily from 10 am – 6 pm.
With coffee in hand, we head back out to enjoy expansive fields of sunflowers and dahlias growing in harmonious abundance. I’ve yet to make a decision as to which blooms to take home with me.
Everywhere you look, the farm is dotted with seasonal flowers, vintage tractors, and historic outbuildings, perfect for photo backdrops.
Consequently, I was able to unleash the shutterbug in me, taking photos of everything I saw! You can’t have too many pictures, right?
As much as I would have loved to stay the whole day, it was time to bid the farm a fond farewell with the promise to return during pumpkin season. I’m a fall girl at heart, so if there’s a harvest festival with hay rides, hot apple cider, and a corn maze, you can count me in!
Ultimately, I selected two simple sunflower stems, and the helpful staff wrapped them up beautifully for the journey home. Sometimes, less is more.
